Koutzman (1999) says that for the student's first language to become lost to an acquired language is, indeed, a los (p. 7). Teaching and learning a second language, when it begins early in life, is increasing the individual ability to communicate. Koutzman taught English as a second language (ESL) and is herself bilingual. The benefit to individual of being bilingual is a multi-faceted one that actually affords an individual a greater breadth of expression, and freedom.
